Don’t be shy about telling your Math tutor about your learning style
This website is all about style. A lot of people think that style is just visual in nature. We all know that this isn’t true. There are many music styles out there and music is usually not visual unless we’re talking about music videos. Style transcends the senses. It’s not just about things that you can see or hear. It’s also about what you eat, smell and what you touch.
Believe it or not, you also have your distinct personal style when it comes to learning. That’s right. When it comes to absorbing information, putting it to use and remembering it, everybody has their own distinct personal style. This is unavoidable because we all have different experiences. We all have different paths to learning information. It may be the same body of information, but it can be processed in so many ways because we have different personalities, we definitely have different values.
I mentioned this because if you have a Math tutor and you’re having a tough time wrapping your mind around a concept, do yourself a big favor and let him or her know about your learning style. This is crucial because they might be speaking to you in a certain way that ensures success if your learning style is different. However, you’re having a tough time because they’re speaking to a style that doesn’t match yours.
Just because there’s a mismatch doesn’t necessarily mean there’s something wrong with you. In fact, in most cases, it’s not your fault. It will be your fault if you don’t tell them that this is the case. You need to speak up. As the old saying goes, “The squeaky wheel gets the grease.” Don’t be shy about telling your Math tutor that things aren’t registering because you are used to processing information a certain way.
If they know what they’re doing and if they’re confident about their teaching skills, this would not be threatening to them. In fact, in many cases, it would be completely expected. They would then step up and present the information in just the right way so that it registers with you. Not only would you be able to understand everything, but it would sink in to such a level that you could actually take action on it and perform better at Math tests. Don’t be afraid of speaking out about your style. Don’t be afraid of demanding that you be taught a certain way because we look at the world differently. We process information differently and it’s about time your Math tutor or anybody else presents to you the information you need in a way you can best use it.
This doesn’t mean you have an entitlement mentality. All this means is that you’re helping your Math tutor help you. I know it sounds corny, but the whole idea of “let me help you help me help you” is actually spot on. You have to speak up otherwise, the person is just going to be barking up the wrong tree and all that time, effort and money that went to this whole production would have been wasted because you’re only learning a fraction of what you could be learning. Everybody has a style and it’s not just about art.
